Five questions with Modern American Vintage

If you haven’t seen the amazing work of Chris at Modern American Vintage yet, hold onto your seam ripper! Chris creates heirloom quality quilting and sewing tools including seam rippers, hera markers, clappers and more. You can read more about his history, his tools, and how Modern American Vintage came to be here.

I’ve teamed up with Chris to offer a super awesome giveaway of the matched set of quilting tools shown above and you can enter to win HERE on my Instagram page!

In the meantime, I chatted with Chris and asked him FIVE QUESTIONS. So let’s get to know the man behind the tools!

What are your five favorite movies?

(This changes on a monthly basis but as of right now:)
Its a Wonderful Life
Shawshank Redemption
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Yes a trilogy counts as one movie)
The Original Star Wars Trilogy
Braveheart

What is your least favorite chore?

I’m not a huge fan of vacuuming the stairs.

What is your favorite thing to do with your free time?

I don’t normally have any free time unfortunately. A normal day for me is go to work, play with the kids and put them to bed, wood work till 9 or 10, then watch a show for an hour and hang out with my wife Britta. Eventually if we ever make it out of the desert and head back East I’d love to go fishing again!

What is on your bucket list of things to create? Doesn’t have to be related to woodworking

THE bucket list item is I would love to be able to build my own log cabin from the ground up! I’d also love to build a cedar strip canoe.

What does the future hold for you and Modern American Vintage?

We are hoping some day soon to make the move out of the desert and head back East where we would love to kind of get back to our homestead-y roots. I grew up out in the country where we had vegetable gardens and chickens and all kinds of animals and we would love to give those kinds of memories to our kiddos. It will also allow for much easier access to quality lumber!

Being out of the suburbs will also give me the opportunity to build a respectable work shop where we don’t have to worry about noise ordinances so I can have even more fun building things! I hope to expand this little family business of ours to include other things like home decor, furniture and other small homemade gifts. Eventually, years down the road, we hope to build a ceramics studio so Britta can get back to one of her first creative passions!

We love the creative process and we can’t wait to share it with our kids!

Not only is Chris uber talented, but he is a super swell, humble, jovial guy to boot! I’m so glad he found his way into the quilting word and happy to call him my friend. I also really hope his plans of moving out East happen sooner than later, because I’d really love to be in the same state!

I can’t recommend Chris’s tool enough, whether you are treating yourself and need a special gift for a special friend. Not only are they handsome and unique works of art, but they perform flawlessly and consistently, feel solid in your hands, and are built to last. The clapper I got from him was a GAME CHANGER!!

You can check out everything Chris creates over at modernamericanvintage.com and keep up with his newest creations on Instagram.
